BS 6920 Test Requirements

To meet the requirements of the Water Regulations Advisory Scheme (WRAS) non-metallic products/materials must conform to the test requirements (BS 6920) in each of the following categories:
 
Odour Bottles
1 Odour & Flavour of Water BS 6920 - 2.2
2 Appearance of Water BS 6920 - 2.3
3 Growth of Aquatic Microorganisms BS 6920 - 2.4
4
The Extraction of Substances that may be of Concern to Public Health (Cytotoxicity) BS 6920 - 2.5
5 The Extraction of Metals BS 6920 - 2.6

Odour & Flavour of Water
This test is designed to show whether the product/material will give a detectable odour or flavour in either chlorine-free or chlorinated water and can take up to 10 working days to complete.

Appearance of Water
This test is designed to show whether the product/material will give any discoloration or turbidity in water and takes up to 10 working days to complete

Growth of Aquatic Microorganisms
This test checks the ability of the product/material to support the growth of microorganisms in water by measuring the depletion of dissolved oxygen. It takes a minimum of 7 to 8 weeks to complete.  

Cytotoxicity
This test is a simple toxicity evaluation carried out by soaking the sample in water, and assessing the water for any toxic reactions with a tissue culture. The test takes a minimum of 7 working days to complete.

Extraction of Metals
This test is designed to show whether toxic metals will leach from the product/material into water. The test takes up to 3 weeks to complete.
